Is it legal and safe?
Instagram displays profile pictures as small circles, and the app has no way to open one at full size. The original image, however, is served publicly at up to 1080 pixels. This page requests that public image through our media relay and shows it at its native size. The relay streams the file and sets the right headers, so the download button saves a normal image file instead of opening a new tab.
Profile pictures are public on both public and private accounts: Instagram shows them to anyone who lands on the profile. That is why this is the only tool on the site that works for private accounts. Everything else on a private profile stays hidden. If a picture looks small, the account uploaded a small image; we never upscale.
Viewing public content is allowed — the account chose to make it public. We don't log in, don't bypass privacy settings and don't store the media you view. Respect copyright when you download.
