Why a profile picture looks so small

Instagram displays profile pictures in a circle that is only a few dozen pixels wide in the feed and larger on the profile itself. To keep pages fast, it serves reduced copies for each place the image appears. Tapping the picture in the app or website gives you a bigger view, but it is still a resized copy chosen for the screen, not the largest one available.

Two facts follow:

• The image you see is a thumbnail-style rendition. The largest available copy can be considerably bigger than what the page shows you.
• Instagram serves a maximum, not the original file. Whatever the account owner uploaded, you get the largest version Instagram chooses to serve. If the owner uploaded a small image, no tool can invent detail that was never there.

What you are looking at: the circle versus the square

Instagram displays profile pictures in a circle, but the image itself is square. In the full copy you see the whole square, including the corners the circle hides. This is why a face can look tightly framed in the app and have plenty of background in the full image.

Saving a public picture for personal reference is one thing, and using it is another. A profile picture is a photograph or artwork that belongs to the person who made it, and it often shows their face. Treat it accordingly:

• Do not use it to impersonate someone. A fake profile with another person's face breaks Instagram's rules and can be harassment or fraud where you live.
• Do not publish it without permission. If you want to use a picture in an article, presentation or ad, ask the owner and credit them.
• Respect removal requests. If a person asks you to delete it, do.

If your goal is a sharper picture of your own, upload a square image with your subject centered and comfortably larger than the enlarged view you currently see. Keep the important content in the middle, because the circle crop cuts the corners. A high-quality upload gives Instagram more to work with, even though it will re-compress the file.

A quick privacy note for account owners

If you would rather strangers could not open your picture at full size, a private account is the only real control, and even then the picture can still show at a small size in search.
