Instagram story not loading or empty? A 7-step decision tree

When an Instagram story will not load or a viewer says "no stories", it is almost always one of five things: the story expired, the account has not posted in the last 24 hours, the account is private, Instagram is throttling the request, or something on your device or network is interfering. The fastest way to tell them apart is to follow the decision tree below, which sorts the cases by what you see on screen.

The trick is to read the symptom first, because "empty" and "broken" call for very different responses.

The one distinction that solves half of all cases

There are two different situations that look identical to the eye:

• Empty: the lookup worked, and there simply is nothing live. Instagram answered "this account has no active stories".
• Failed: the lookup did not work. Nothing about the account was learned.

If a tool blurs these together you will keep retrying a lookup that succeeded, or give up on one that only needed a minute. We show them as separate states on purpose. "No stories" means the account is quiet. "Could not reach Instagram" means try again later.

Decision tree

Start at question 1 and follow the answer.

1. Is the account public?

Open the profile in a private browser window without logging in. If you can see the posts, it is public. If you see "This account is private", stop here. (Instagram sometimes shows a login wall to logged-out visitors even for public profiles, so a wall alone does not prove an account is private.)

• Private: stories are only served to approved followers (Opens in a new window). No viewer can show them, and the honest answer is "follow and get approved, or ask the owner". Any site promising otherwise is a scam. See how to view stories anonymously for what is and is not possible.
• Public: go to question 2.

2. Did the account post a story in the last 24 hours?

Stories normally expire 24 hours after posting (Opens in a new window). If the profile picture has no colored ring in the app, there is normally no active story. A viewer will report no stories, and that is correct.

• No ring or no recent post: the tray is genuinely empty. Check again later. If you want something that does not expire, look at the profile's highlights.
• Ring visible in the app but a viewer says nothing: go to question 3.

3. Could the story be audience-restricted?

Owners can hide a story from specific people (Opens in a new window), or share it only with a Close Friends list (Opens in a new window). In the app you may see a ring where a web tool sees nothing, because the story is shared only with a chosen audience that a logged-out lookup is not in. Green ring in the app means Close Friends. • Green ring, or you are hidden: nothing to fix.
• Normal ring, public account: go to question 4.

4. Is the username exactly right?

A typo is the most common cause of "user not found". Look for swapped characters, an extra underscore, a letter O in place of a zero, or a display name typed in place of the username. • Wrong or outdated: correct it and retry.
• Exactly right: go to question 5.

5. Did you get an error message or just a blank spinner?

• Explicit "temporarily unavailable" or rate-limit style message: Instagram is throttling requests. Wait a few minutes. Retrying every few seconds keeps you throttled longer.
• Endless spinner with no message: the request may be stuck in your browser. Go to question 6.

6. Is your side clean?

Run these in order and retest after each:

1. Reload the page once, then leave it a minute.
2. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the reverse.
3. Turn off a VPN or proxy briefly, or change its location.
4. Disable extensions that block scripts or media for this site, then reload.
5. Try another browser, a private window or another device.
6. Clear this site's data or update the browser.

If it works on another device or network, the culprit was local. If it fails everywhere, it is upstream: go to question 7.

7. Is it down for everyone?

Web viewers rely on fetching Instagram data through servers, and Instagram changes its defenses from time to time. When it does, viewers can fail for hours. Check our status page if you use this site. If it is a wide outage, nothing on your side will help. Come back later.

Special cases people run into

The story loads but is only partly there

A story can hold many items. If some items load and others do not, an item may have been deleted by the owner mid-way, or a large video may time out. Reload once. If a specific item keeps failing, skip it.

The story played yesterday but not today

Stories last 24 hours. Yesterday's story is gone unless the owner saved it to a highlight. This one catches many people, since the profile still looks the same.

It works for one account and not another

Accounts differ: one may be private, one may be quiet, one may have restricted audience. That is not a fault in the tool. It is the accounts.

A recently created or very new account

New accounts may not be available to lookups straight away, and accounts flagged by Instagram may be limited. If you know the account is public and active, retry later.

Blocked by a network

Some workplace and school networks block whole categories of sites. If the page itself will not open, or media never loads, test on mobile data.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say no stories when I can see one in the app?

The story may be limited to Close Friends or hidden from certain people, or the app is showing it to you because you follow the account. A logged-out lookup only sees what a public visitor can.

How long should I wait after a failed lookup?

A few minutes is enough for most throttling. Retrying immediately and repeatedly tends to make it last longer.

Can a viewer show stories from a private account?

No. Private stories are only served to approved followers. Any tool claiming to bypass that is not telling the truth.

Do I need to log in to see a public story?

Not with our viewer. The lookup runs on our server, so you need no Instagram account and you do not appear in the owner's viewer list. We do record the username you searched, as our privacy policy explains.

Why do stories disappear after a day?

Instagram stories are designed to expire 24 hours after they are posted. Owners can keep them longer by adding them to a highlight.

Does a VPN cause story loading problems?

It can. Some VPN address ranges are challenged more heavily than home connections. Disable it briefly to test.
